South Dakota Arts Council

As many of you know, I'm a Touring Artist and an Artist-in-Residence for the South Dakota Arts Council.

In other words, I'm a "literary artist." (This gives me a new way to think about myself as an author!)

Here's the blurb that appears on the SD Arts Council website:

For more than twenty years, author Jean L.S. Patrick has been making nonfiction come alive for thousands of students in South Dakota and throughout the United States with her interactive presentations and energetic writing workshops.

Jean's large-group presentations include storytelling, audience participation, and plenty of hands-on learning opportunities. In fact, she is known to use old baseball gloves, shot puts, Mount Rushmore drill bits, and stacks of her rough drafts to demonstrate her research and writing process.

During her writing workshops (for smaller groups and classroom), she encourages creativity through wordplay, kinesthetic activities, found poetry, and the use of primary sources and photographs.

Jean enjoys working with all ages (PreK-adult) at schools, libraries, and community events. (Note: Residencies based on Jean's Mount Rushmore books work especially well with 4th-grade South Dakota history units.)

Jean is the award-winning author of twelve books, including
Long-armed Ludy and the First Women's Olympics (Charlesbridge, 2017); The Girl Who Struck Out Babe Ruth, and four books about Mount Rushmore.

South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
